Sam Sherman graciously answered some questions I had regarding the film:
Q: I also watched all those Filipino horror trailers on the dvd, and noticed they were all released by Hemisphere. Was that a division of IIP? I ask that because the way the trailers were set up.....the look of the titles and how they were used in the trailers....not to mention some of the sound fx and also hearing Brother Theodore's voice, led me to believe Hemisphere was part of IIP.
A: Hemisphere started in business in 1963 and lasted until the late 1970s.
I worked for them from 1964 until the early 1970s overlapping when I started IIP, which was in late 1968. Hemisphere was its own company as is
IIP. On the commentary tracks for the 6 "Blood Collection" films, I tell the complete
story of Hemisphere Pictures in sequence, starting with-
THE BLOOD DRINKERS
BRIDES OF BLOOD
MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND
BEAST OF BLOOD
BRAIN OF BLOOD
BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRES
I produced all of those Hemisphere trailers except THE BLOOD DRINKERS, which was made by National Screen Service. So what you are seeing is Sam Sherman-style trailers.
Q: Ah, ok.....and I guess you ended up using Brother Theodore for the narration in Hemisphere and some of the IIP trailers then, right? Got it. Several of the dubbed voices over the TAGANI footage sounded like actor and voice artist Paul Frees dubbed them. Was he involved in the dubbing of the footage at all? I've heard his voice in enough films, trailers, and tv programs that I sometimes recognize his voice.
A: I thought the dubbing was done in the Philippines as the dubbed voices are also in the TAGANI trailer - but they may have been done in Hollywood.
Q: Sam I just read this on IMDB....is this true? I've never heard this before about stock footage in HOTBM:
"here we have a movie that steal clips of stock footage from the likes of "Unknown Island" and "Robot Monster"
Did you and Al really use stock footage from the films this person mentioned?
A: HORROR OF THE BLOOD MONSTERS started with a Philippine film -
TAGANI - then stock footage clips were licensed from stock footage libraries in LA and I have no idea of the sources of these clips. Then over several
time periods the shooting of the main film was done by Al Adamson in LA.
The film is a pastiche of materials from various sources. There is no secret to that.
Best,
Sam
Q:
Sam, the subject of Brother Theodore has popped up in an internet board I
frequent. Someone asked if that was Theodore's voice in the MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD
ISLAND trailer, and I said yes it was, and that Theodore had also done the
opening voiceover narration for HORROR OF THE BLOOD MONSTERS.
I don't think I've ever asked you about Theodore before, so could you tell me
how in the world you got this very unique personality to do the voiceovers for
you (in particular for HOTBM), and if those were the only two times you had him
do voiceover work for you?
A:
Brother Theodore was a close friend of mine. I asked him to play
"Dracula" in DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN and he turned me down. He did
the narration of the trailer of MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND, which I wrote
especially in his style. I produced many trailers in the 1960s-1980s. Theodore
also did the opening narration for me for HORROR OF THE BLOOD MONSTERS, and the
trailer narration for-
HORROR OF THE BLOOD MONSTERS
and also
NIGHT OF THE LAUGHING DEAD (a/k/a CRAZY HOUSE)
